Belmont Punch

Well it’s finally here… Belmont Stakes day! And what a gorgeous Saturday for a horse race! Although the Kentucky Derby has all the prestige and traditions, IMO the Belmont is the most exciting! That’s where triple crown winners are made after all! ๐Ÿ†

I still can’t believe I actually got to witness a triple crown victory last year! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ American Pharoah was the first horse to accomplish this feat in 37 years… Talk about witnessing a piece of history! And although there isn’t a chance for a triple crown this year, my family still likes to make a day of watching the race. It’s become a sort of tradition around here. ๐Ÿ™‚

A nice bowl of refreshing ‘Belmont Punch’.

No celebration is complete without a little adult beveraging. The signature drink at Belmont Park on Stakes day is the Belmont Breeze, a delicious bourbon and sherry cocktail, but not the simplest to recreate at home. In the interest of making a more party-friendly version, I created this Belmont PUNCH! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿ˜Ž

Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry and Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey.

There’s two kinds of alcohol in this punch, and I think it’s important not to skimp on quality here. You really will get a much better tasting punch if you buy the good stuff. I used Harvey’s Bristol Cream Sherry and Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. You can’t REALLY watch a horse race without having some Woodford Reserve on hand anyways… Can you? ๐Ÿ˜‰

No alcohol was consumed yet at this point… ๐Ÿ™„

My aunt Meg and I set about making the punch. Now, as you’ll come to know if you continue following my blog, anytime Meg and I are in the kitchen together, some sort of disaster ensues… I (jokingly) said, as I started measuring liquids into the punch bowl, “How many ingredients do you think will get in the bowl before I spill something?” I measured out a cup of orange juice, a cup of cranberry juice, then reach for the sherry and hear a fizzing sound and Meg screams! ๐Ÿ˜ณ She’d opened the club soda which she was now suddenly wearing, as was my cell phone ๐Ÿ˜’. I tell you, this was minor compared to some of our incidents… At least we’re never boring! ๐Ÿ˜†

Backyard bocce tournament in progress.

We managed to get things under control somehow and finished the punch in time to sit out in the backyard and watch as Pap and my uncle Greggor played a deciding game of their bocce tournament. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

Please make sure your pets drink responsibly…

As we were lounging enjoying the beautiful breeze and getting into the excitement of their final game, we looked down to see this! Timmy had stuck his face right in my glass of punch and was lapping away! That sneaky cat! ๐Ÿ˜ผ

Belmont Punch recipe below.

On that note, I’m going to go keep an eye on my son ๐Ÿ˜ผ, sip my drink and enjoy the rest of this pre-race party… I hope it’s a good, safe race  this evening. My money’s on Cherry Wine today, not that there’s actually any money involved! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿท๐Ÿ‡ Happy Stakes Day!
